Happy Friday World,
On Wednesday, history was made. Nebraska Volleyball just put itself into a league of its own, not only for the sport of volleyball but also for the NCAA. The Cornhuskers set a world record for attendance at a women’s sporting event, with 92,003 fans packing out Memorial Stadium, the Huskers’ football stadium.
This is the culmination of a race to hold the record for a NCAA regular-season volleyball match. Last year, Nebraska set a record with 15,797 during a match at Creighton, but that was broken one week later when rivals Wisconsin packed out 16,833 fans into the Kohl Center.
Nebraska announced its plans to take back the record in April and quickly sold out 82,900 tickets. They would later open up thousands more in standing-room-only tickets, allowing them to hit the 92,000 mark.
The school would take it one step forward by canceling classes and announcing it as “Volleyball Day,” allowing for students and staff to tailgate and create an incredible atmosphere.
This is an excellent accomplishment. Not only for the sport of volleyball, but more importantly women’s sports! The sport of volleyball seems to be on the rise in the NCAA due to its quick pace and amazing atmosphere. There is real promise here for the future of the sport, and I can’t wait to see it continue to grow.
Nebraska won their matchup against Omaha in a 3-0 sweep. The Cornhuskers currently rank fourth in the country.
