Is ESPN In Trouble For Altering a Clip of Damian Lillard?
Hello World,
The talk of the off-season focused around where Damian Lillard would land and why it would be Miami. But last month, this story took a turn as he would be traded to the Milwaukee Bucks to form a new super duo with Giannis Antetokumpo. However, that isn't what we are here to talk about. Today, we are going to talk about a clip that ESPN altered and how dangerous this could be.
With the rise of artificial intelligence has come a lot of clips being able to be forged and put words in people's mouths. Although this clip ESPN used didn't alter anything Lillard said, it changed his jersey from a Trailblazers one to a Bucks one. The worst part of this all is how ESPN could be in legal trouble with TNT after erasing their logos and trying to pass it as their own clip. However, no public legal action has been taken at this time.
The real scary thing to consider is how players are going to be portrayed if these digitally altered clips and how this is setting a precedent. This is a misrepresentation of his likeness. Now the question becomes, are there any grounds for him to go after ESPN about a misusage of his image?
With media rights continuing to skyrocket, I'm intrigued to see if players will be able to get protection against this or if they will be compensated even better than they have been in the past.
This definitely was an interesting move by ESPN, as they just pulled a random clip from the bubble, assuming people would get the reference. Surely, this isn't the way to compete with other sports media companies like Overtime and Bleacher Report to get eyes on their product, right?
